BT Group
Union-negotiated reskilling at scale is rare and worth studying. If your company has a unionized workforce, BT's CWU/Prospect reskilling agreements are the precedent your L&D budget conversations should reference.
- Reduction
- Total labour resource of 130,000 employees and contractors to fall to between 75,000 and 90,000 by FY28 to FY30, announced May 2023. BT attributes about 10,000 of that to digitisation and automation in customer services, which is the only AI-adjacent figure and the one charted here
- Share of workforce
- 10% of about 100,000 employees
- HR function
- Broader workforce; HR Operations/Shared Services; customer service roles
- AI tool
- AI-enabled network automation; generative AI chatbot (Amy); dark NOC automation; AI network planning tools
- The workflow
- HR Operations named in the mix but customer service and network automation are the primary drivers.
- Strategic pivot
- Partial, AI automation explicitly named as driver; reskilling commitments made with unions; no formal skills-based talent management framework announced
What happened
Reskilling programs with unions (CWU, Prospect); attrition management over 5-7 year horizon; transition to self-healing network operations roles
Why this credibility tier
Corrected on 2026-09-03 in the backfill audit. The row charted 55,000, the ceiling of a 40,000 to 55,000 band projected to 2030, as an AI figure, which overstated AI attribution more than fivefold and made this single row 16 percent of the dataset total. BT announced in May 2023 that total labour resource would fall from 130,000 to between 75,000 and 90,000 by FY28 to FY30. BT itself attributes about 10,000 of that to digitisation and automation in customer services, about 15,000 to completion of the fibre build, about 10,000 to lower maintenance on newer networks and about 5,000 to conventional restructuring, with about 15,000 unitemised. BT's written results statement does not use the words artificial intelligence. headcount_num is now the 10,000 BT attributes to digitisation and automation, and the percentage field is null because the band divides a contractor-inclusive numerator by an employee-only denominator. The 10,000 is a projection to 2030 rather than a realised reduction, which is why the row is Reported and not Verified.

BT Group results for the full year to 31 March 2023, 18 May 2023, which states "Total labour resource to reduce from 130k to 75-90k by FY28-FY30"; the release itself puts no number on AI or automation. TelecomTV, May 2023 carries the roughly 10,000 customer-services digitisation figure, which came from Philip Jansen's remarks to reporters on the day, not from the release.
