What happened

Presented as a move to a 24/7 streaming-first local news model with digital production centralized into hubs. President and CEO Adam Symson told investors on Aug 6, 2026 that Scripps is "in the midst of transforming Scripps through fundamental changes in how we operate" and that "these changes leverage today's most advanced technology, AI and automation to both deliver improved operating results and allow us to better serve our local consumers, audiences and advertisers." He described the eliminations as "difficult decisions, including eliminating 268 jobs across the company earlier this week, in service to our ability to survive and thrive." Symson has separately said the company spent about three years building toward the model through investments in technology and automated workflows that let it allocate fewer resources to production tasks and more to reporting from the field. The cuts sit inside an enterprise transformation plan targeting $125m to $150m of EBITDA growth by 2028, with roughly $100m of annual run-rate savings expected by year end.

Why this credibility tier

Re-reviewed 2026-08-14 against the HP exception and deliberately left at Reported. Under the old reading the only gap was the missing tool name, which the HP exception would have waived. Reading the filed exhibit closely, the real gap is different and does not get waived: AI and the 268 eliminations are both in Adam Symson's statement, but they are never causally joined. He says the transformation "leverage[s] today's most advanced technology, AI and automation", and several paragraphs later, in a passage about attacking industry disruption with bold strategic bets, he says Scripps is "making difficult decisions, including eliminating 268 jobs across the company earlier this week, in service to our ability to survive and thrive." Adjacent, not causal. The same document also supplies a large competing explanation: revenue down 9.2% year over year and a $1.1 billion non-cash goodwill and intangible impairment on Scripps Networks, against a weak national advertising market. HP and Cloudflare each have a filing that says AI enabled the reduction. Scripps has a filing that says AI is part of the transformation and, separately, that jobs went. Promote if Scripps names the production systems or ties the reduction to them on the record.

What this means for HR

The first broadcast case in the dataset, and it moves the story out of software. The roles going are producers and directors, craft jobs with no obvious internal redeployment path inside a shrinking station group. The transferable question for HR is not whether automation can assemble a newscast; it is what you owe people whose craft the new operating model simply does not contain.
