Future Fluent HR, AI Workforce Impact Dashboard. Five9 (April 2025): Approximately 4% of global full-time employees; graded Reported; the company cut to fund AI. Source: U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Reviewed Oct 23, 2026. https://dashboard.futurefluenthr.ai/case/five9/

Reduction
No count published by the company. Its filing says approximately 4% of global full-time employees; Five9 reported 3,073 full-time employees at December 31, 2024, so 4% is roughly 120 people, arithmetic on the annual report figure rather than a number the company stated. A trade outlet reported about 120 after the company confirmed the 4%
Percentage given
Approximately 4% of global full-time employees, the company's own figure in its filing
Share of workforce, worked out
Not worked out: the record has no role count to divide.
Jobs affected
Managers & layersClosest US occupation groups: General and Operations Managers
HR function
Not broken down. Chief executive Mike Burkland's email to staff, filed with the 8-K, says the company is strategically aligning its workforce and reducing organizational layers. No HR-function roles are named
AI tool
No tool is named. The filing gives prioritising investment in key strategic areas, including artificial intelligence, as the purpose of the plan; Five9 sells AI contact-centre software but its documents do not say its own AI does the work of the roles cut
The workflow
Company-wide, not HR roles. Included because Five9's own filing gives prioritising investment in artificial intelligence as the purpose of the reduction in force, and its chief executive repeats the reason in the filed email
Strategic pivot
Not disclosed. Severance and job transition assistance are offered; the company has said nothing on redeployment or retraining

What happened

Five9 disclosed the plan in a Form 8-K filed April 3, 2025. Its board had approved "a reduction in force plan (the “Plan”) as part of the Company’s broader efforts to prioritize investments in key strategic areas, including artificial intelligence, as well as to drive profitable growth" on March 31, 2025, and execution began on April 3, with the plan "expected to reduce the Company’s global full-time employees by approximately 4%." The company estimated $7 million to $9 million of cash costs, mainly severance, notice-period pay and benefits, plus $1 million to $1.5 million of non-cash share-award costs, and expected the actions to be substantially complete by the end of the second quarter of 2025. Chief executive Mike Burkland's email to employees, filed as the exhibit, opens: "As we continue to focus on shareholder value, delivering greater profitability, and investing more meaningfully in AI and other key strategic areas, we need to make some changes to our organization design and our priorities." It says Five9 is "strategically aligning our workforce and reducing organizational layers", that about 4% of the global employee population is leaving, and that all displaced employees receive severance and job transition assistance. The same filing lists among its risk factors that AI solutions will likely perform an increasing proportion of contact centre interactions, which is the market Five9 sells into. Five9 had 3,073 full-time employees at December 31, 2024; CX Today reported the cut at about 120 people after the company confirmed the 4% and said it had restructured certain areas of the organization. It was the second reduction in a year, after a cut of about 6% in August 2024.

What HR should take from it

Five9 cut about 4% of its people and gave AI as a reason, but as a destination for investment rather than as the thing doing the work. Its filing says the plan exists to prioritise spending on key strategic areas including artificial intelligence; its chief executive told staff the company is investing more meaningfully in AI and therefore needs to change its organisation design and remove layers. That is the reallocation pattern, and it is common enough in 2025 and 2026 to deserve its own reading. For an HR leader the distinction changes the conversation with employees. "We are funding AI and that money comes from roles" is a budget choice that leadership owns; "AI replaced these roles" is a claim about the work that can be checked. Five9 made the first claim, and its documents make no attempt at the second. Two things stand out. The company put the chief executive's email into the regulatory filing itself, so the staff account and the public account are identical, which is how a case earns Reported rather than Inferred. And the company sells AI to contact centres while cutting its own staff to fund AI, a combination its own risk factors acknowledge: it tells investors that AI will take a growing share of contact centre interactions. If your organisation is both a buyer and a seller of the technology, expect employees to ask whether the product is being used on them, and have an answer that matches what the filing says.

Why this credibility tier

Five9's own filing says the reduction in force was approved as part of its effort to prioritise investment in key strategic areas including artificial intelligence, and its chief executive repeats that in the email to staff filed beside it, so the attribution is the company's and Inferred is ruled out. It is reallocation, not replacement: nothing in either document says AI does the work of the roles cut, and no system is named, which holds it below Verified. The company gave a rate, about 4%, and no count, so quote the percentage; the roughly 120 is arithmetic on an older headcount. A named system at work in the affected teams would lift it.

Highlighted: the words that tie AI to this cut.

The cut frees money or capacity for AI. AI is where the resources go, not what does the eliminated work. The tier says how solid the evidence is; this says how plainly the company itself tied AI to the cut. How this is coded
