What happened
Redeployment to software engineering, sales, marketing; CHRO stated 'very few roles completely replaced'; new focus on AI-fluent HRBPs; HR staff shifted to managing AI platforms and change consulting. UPDATE Jul 2026: IBM announced it will TRIPLE US entry-level hiring in 2026 after CHRO LaMoreaux warned the 6% of HR queries AskHR could not handle required human judgment, and cutting junior roles was drying up the leadership pipeline.
Why this credibility tier
Re-checked 2026-08-14 and held at Verified. All three elements are present and unusually clean. The tool is named and is IBM's own (AskHR, alongside AskIT and an internal LLM), the workflow change is measured at 94% of routine HR queries automated, and CEO Arvind Krishna is on the record in the Wall Street Journal, a Tier 1 outlet, saying AI has replaced a couple of hundred HR roles. The row is deliberately small: 200 to 300 roles against a 7,800 five-year projection, and the projection is not counted. Two counterweights are kept on the row rather than dropped, because they are what makes this case honest: CHRO Nickle LaMoreaux said very few roles were completely replaced and staff were redeployed into software engineering, sales and marketing, and in July 2026 IBM said it would triple US entry-level hiring. This is a substitution-plus-redeployment case, not a net reduction, and should not be cited as one.
