Future Fluent HR, AI Workforce Impact Dashboard. WiseTech Global (February 2026): 2,000 roles; graded Reported; the company names AI as the reason. Source: WiseTech Global. Reviewed Oct 16, 2026. https://dashboard.futurefluenthr.ai/case/wisetech-global/
- Reduction
- Approximately 2,000 roles in FY26 and into FY27, the company's own estimate in its ASX release of February 25, 2026, from a phased reduction of up to 50% of product and development and customer service headcount, with other functions in scope from FY27. Reuters put the global workforce at around 7,000 across 40 countries after the August 2025 acquisition of e2open, which makes the cut about 29%. At its FY26 results on August 26, 2026 WiseTech reported a reduction of about 1,200 roles across product and development and customer service so far
- Percentage given
- Up to 50% of product and development and customer service headcount, WiseTech's own figure, which is a share of two functions and not of the company. Against the roughly 7,000 global workforce Reuters reported, approximately 2,000 roles is about 29%; that is arithmetic on a press figure, not a rate WiseTech stated
- Share of workforce, worked out
- Not worked out: the record has no company size to divide by.
- Jobs affected
- Engineering & product, Customer supportClosest US occupation groups: Software Developers, Software Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers, Computer and Information Systems Managers, Customer Service Representatives
- HR function
- Product and development and customer service first, across the company including e2open, with other functions in scope from FY27. The release says software development is where AI brings the efficiencies, and the FY26 results add that over 90% of code is now written or assisted by AI and that customer service completes support tickets 22% faster through AI. No HR-function roles are named
- AI tool
- No system is named for the internal reduction. WiseTech describes AI embedded across its software and operations and, at its FY26 results, CargoWise AI agents for customers; the release attributes the headcount reduction to the shift to an AI-led organization rather than to any named tool
- The workflow
- Product and development and customer service roles, not HR roles. Included because WiseTech's own ASX release attributes the headcount reduction to the shift to an AI-led organization and its chief executive ties it to AI in software development in the same document
- Strategic pivot
- Not disclosed. The release describes the program as building a leaner, AI-led organization and a higher-performance culture and says nothing about retraining or redeployment for the roles removed; the FY26 results report the savings and the productivity gains, not what happened to the people
What happened
WiseTech Global announced in its ASX release of February 25, 2026, headed "WTC reaffirms FY26 guidance & accelerates AI transformation", the next phase of its efficiency program, starting in the second half of FY26 and continuing into FY27 and "expecting to reduce teams - initially product & development and customer service across the company, including e2open, by up to 50% in terms of headcount." The release says the program "will likely result in a reduction of approximately 2,000 roles in FY26 and into FY27" and describes it "as part of the shift to becoming an AI-led organization", with other functions in scope from FY27. Chief executive Zubin Appoo is quoted in it: "Software development has experienced its most significant shift in decades. I am prepared to say this clearly: the era of manually writing code as the core act of engineering is over." He says AI amplifies the productivity of WiseTech's logistics expertise, datasets and network, and that the AI transformation is expected to deliver "a leaner, more efficient AI-led organization supporting a structurally lower cost base" and significantly higher productivity in software development. The release was issued with first-half results showing revenue up 76% to $672 million on the e2open acquisition and CargoWise revenue up 12%, and the company reaffirmed FY26 guidance excluding the effects of the headcount reduction, saying execution costs would likely offset savings in FY26. Reuters reported the same day that the cut was about 29% of a global workforce of around 7,000 across 40 countries, that some teams could shrink by half, and that e2open, acquired in August 2025 for $2.1 billion, may see cuts of up to 50%; WiseTech shares closed 11.1% higher. At its FY26 results on August 26, 2026 the company reported $34 million of annual EBITDA run-rate savings from the AI transformation program "with a reduction of ~1,200 roles across Product & Development and Customer Service", $23.7 million of AI transformation restructuring costs in FY26, over 75% of the team using AI, over 90% of code written or assisted by AI, a 45% increase in engineering productivity and 22% faster completion of support tickets, and said product development had fallen to 39% of total headcount, down 26 points on FY25.
What HR should take from it
WiseTech Global is the clearest software-engineering case in this record: an ASX-listed company telling the exchange that it will halve its product and development and customer service headcount, about 2,000 roles, because it is becoming an AI-led organization, with its chief executive stating that the era of manually writing code as the core act of engineering is over. Most AI-attributed cuts elsewhere are framed as efficiency or reallocation; this one names the function, the mechanism and the proportion in the company's own document, and it was announced beside results that beat expectations, so cost pressure is not the cover story. Two cautions before quoting it. The 2,000 is an estimate across two financial years and the 50% is a share of two functions, not of the company; six months in, WiseTech reported about 1,200 roles removed and a $34 million run-rate saving, so the program is real but still running. And no system is named: the company reports that over 90% of its code is now written or assisted by AI without saying which tools, which is why it sits at Reported rather than Verified. For HR leaders in technology companies the planning signal is the proportion. A 50% reduction in engineering and support is not the 5 to 10% trims most AI-attributed announcements describe, and WiseTech paired it with a transaction-based commercial model so that revenue no longer depends on seat counts. If your engineering leaders are making the same claim about AI-written code, the question to put to them is WiseTech's own: what share of the work is the tooling doing today, measured, and what does the organisation look like when it is doing more.
Why this credibility tier
WiseTech's ASX release of February 25, 2026 announces a phased reduction of up to 50% of product and development and customer service headcount, about 2,000 roles, as part of the shift to becoming an AI-led organization, and chief executive Zubin Appoo says in it that the era of manually writing code is over, so Inferred is ruled out. It stays below Verified because no AI system is tied to the reduction. The 2,000 is an estimate over two financial years and the 50% applies to two functions, not the company; by August 2026 WiseTech reported about 1,200 roles removed. A named system would lift it.
Graded Reported when added, Oct 2026.
How the company put it
Names AI as the reason
- Names AI as the reason
- One of several reasons
- Cutting to fund AI
- Mentions AI, no link
- Link only off the record
- Denies AI caused it
- Says nothing about AI
“As a continuation of this efficiency program and as part of the shift to becoming an AI-led organization, WiseTech has announced a phased reduction of up to 50% of product & development and customer service headcount initially, with other functions in scope from FY27.”
Highlighted: the words that tie AI to this cut.
The company or a named executive says AI drives or enables this cut. The tier says how solid the evidence is; this says how plainly the company itself tied AI to the cut. How this is coded
