Every case in the dataset, with the charts, filters, and comparison tools. The narrative briefing lives on the front page; this page is for working the data.
Which functions, how credible, and when it accelerated
Three views of the same 54 cases. Which HR functions get named, how credible the AI attribution is, and the quarterly timeline showing when the pace shifted.
Which HR functions get named
Full datasetCases where the company named a specific HR function in its own disclosure. Cases that never named a function are excluded, so this counts disclosure, not total impact.
How credible is the AI attribution?
Full datasetThe signal-vs-noise breakdown. Verified requires all three: named tool, measurable workflow or headcount change, executive on the record in a Tier 1 outlet or filing. Two documented exceptions are set out in the methodology.
Your sector, compared
Every sector in the record, with how many cases it holds, how many pass every test, the middle announcement's share of workforce, and the tools companies named. A median needs at least three cases to appear.
| Sector | Cases | Verified | Median share | Reversals | Tools named |
|---|
How big a bite each announcement takes
Full datasetEvery case that discloses both a headcount and a company size, placed by how large the employer is and how much of its workforce the announcement covers, coloured by credibility tier. The horizontal axis is logarithmic: these employers run from about a thousand people to over two million.
This record against the national count
Full datasetChallenger, Gray & Christmas counts US job cuts attributed to AI. This record counts the roles in each case it grades, split by whether the company made the attribution or we did. US cases only, so the two sides count the same country.
Announcements by quarter
Cases in this dataset, bucketed by the quarter of first public announcement, colored by credibility tier. Multi-year programs (BT Group's plan through 2030, UPS 2024, etc.) are placed in the first quarter of their announced start. The pattern is a slow trickle from 2023Q2 through 2024, sustained volume across 2025, then a step-change in 2026H1. The volume grew and the evidence did not: Verified has never exceeded one case in any quarter.
Filter and overlay options
Projection Linear projection of the trailing 4-quarter average, split proportionally across credibility tiers. Not a forecast. Illustrative of current pace, subject to reversal signals in the watchlist.
The observation window opens in Jan 2021, two years before ChatGPT, and holds no qualifying case before Apr 2023. 35 of 54 cases are Technology companies; the watch list is where other sectors are appearing first.

How we grade credibility
Verified. A named AI tool, a measurable workflow or headcount change, and an executive on the record in a Tier 1 outlet (Reuters, Bloomberg, WSJ, CNBC, FT) or SEC filing. All three elements present.
Reported. Credible Tier 1 press attribution, but one of the three Verified elements is missing or paraphrased.
Inferred. The AI attribution is partial or directional, supported by public disclosure but not fully confirmed. A credible outlet, filing, or industry analyst connects the workforce decision to AI adoption, but neither the company nor a named executive has confirmed the linkage.
Two documented exceptions. HP Inc. and Cloudflare are graded Verified without a named AI tool. Neither names one anywhere, but the SEC filings of both causally join AI to the workforce reduction, which is the test: HP states that AI efficiencies are what enable the reduction and names the 4,000 to 6,000 in the same plan, and Cloudflare defines its plan by its evolution to an agentic AI-first operating model and calls the cut “our related recent workforce reduction.” The two are not equally strong, and the difference is worth stating. HP’s filing carries the number as well as the link. Cloudflare’s carries the link only: no headcount figure appears alongside its AI language anywhere in the 10-Q, and the size of that cut, about 1,100 people or 20%, comes from Cloudflare’s own announcement rather than from the filing. We judged a filed causal statement to be stronger evidence than a product name. That test is narrow on purpose. Oracle and E.W. Scripps were re-reviewed against it and stay Reported, because neither filing makes the causal join at all: Oracle names no AI share of its 21,000, and Scripps mentions AI and the 268 job eliminations separately without connecting them. A named tool does not have to be a product a company sells: IBM is Verified on AskHR, the agent it built for its own HR function, the same way monday.com is Verified on the platform it does sell. Groupon named Project Foundry and still sits at Reported, because a September 2026 sourcing audit found the programme attaches to a later phase of the plan rather than to the 400 roles, so no named tool is tied to the reduction itself. The exceptions are recorded here, and on each row, so they are visible rather than left for a reader to notice.
Reversals are tracked only when publicly announced. Full editorial standards, corrections policy, and contact live in the footer note.

| Commonwealth Bank of AustraliaThe AI-attributed reduction lands on outsourced customer chat support, outside CBA's own headcount. CEO Enrique Lores told Bloomberg the savings come from applying AI tools to product development, customer support, sales and manufacturing | No product or vendor is named. HP's own filings describe internal deployments: AI integrated into the channel partner experience, and AI agents scaled in supply chain operations. Artificial intelligence adoption and enablement costs are booked inside the restructuring plan itself, under other charges | Verified | Yes | |
| HDFC BankThe headcount movement is in non-supervisory and back-office operational roles, not HR. HR is nonetheless a named deployment site for the bank's generative AI: onboarding, salary account opening, compensation management and recognition programmes all run GenAI, and the GenAI Academy put more than 50,600 employees through training. | 211kEnterprise | Financial ServicesBanking | Mar 2026 (fiscal year end; disclosed Jul 2026) | 1.6% | Non-supervisory and back-office operational roles. | Expedia GroupNo HR-function cut is disclosed. The affected organization is product and technology, roughly 8,000 of about 16,000 employees. The HR relevance is org design rather than headcount: a leadership delayering, a rebuild around small end-to-end squads, and promotion of four senior directors into the vacated vice president layer. | 16kEnterprise | TechnologyE-Commerce | Aug 2026 | n/d | Product and technology. The named departures cover checkout, payments, fraud and risk, post-booking self-service, pricing, lodging, data platform and travel platform. Expedia's CFO has separately said AI agents handle more than half of customer queries, and the company was a launch partner when OpenAI opened ChatGPT to outside apps | Inferred | Yes | |
| PinterestNo HR-function cut is disclosed. The reduction is company-wide with sales and go-to-market named as a transformation target and engineers reported among those affected. HR relevance is twofold: a simultaneous reduction and AI-skills hiring program running through the same restructuring, and the internal communications failure around who had been let go. | 5kMid-market | TechnologySocial Media | Jan 2026 | 15.0% | Not broken out by the company. The 8-K names sales and go-to-market as a transformation target and says resources are being reallocated to "AI-focused roles and teams that drive AI adoption and execution." Trade coverage reported engineers among those cut. Pinterest said separately that the organizational changes include hiring AI-proficient talent, so this is a partial substitution of one skill profile for another rather than a straight subtraction | No vendor product is named. Pinterest's own consumer AI surfaces are the nearest thing to a named tool: Pinterest Assistant, a shopping recommendation feature, and AI-powered updates to user boards, both introduced in October 2025. Neither is presented by the company as the thing that absorbed the eliminated work | Reported | Yes | |
| GrouponNo HR-function cut is disclosed. The reduction spans functions globally and mixes employees with contractors. HR relevance is the disclosed reinvestment commitment, up to half of 2026 savings going to marketing, AI infrastructure and talent density, and a pre-announced second phase running to the end of 2027 that survivors can read in the filing. | 2kMid-market | TechnologyE-Commerce | May 2026 | 23.0% | Not broken out. The filing describes embedding AI agents across "every function" under Project Foundry and flags "additional material cost-reduction and automation actions related to Project Foundry" as a second phase still requiring board approval, targeted for completion by the end of 2027 | Project Foundry, Groupon's named programme for embedding AI agents into the core of every function. It is built and run internally rather than bought, and Groupon names no third-party model or platform beneath it, but the 8-K attaches the plan's "additional material cost-reduction and automation actions" to Project Foundry by name. | Reported | Yes | |
| ClickUpNo HR-function cut is disclosed. The reduction is company-wide and the disclosed detail is structural rather than functional. HR relevance is unusually high for a case this size: an explicit three-part role taxonomy built around who operates AI systems, and a compensation redesign announced simultaneously with the reduction that routes the savings into uncapped individual bands. | 1kMid-market | TechnologyEnterprise Software | May 2026 | 22.0% | Not broken out by role. ClickUp described the target structure instead: three groups, builders and system managers who build and operate AI systems, and front-liners who hold customer relationships. The implication is that coordination and execution roles that fell outside those three categories were the ones removed | No third-party model or vendor is named. ClickUp says it runs roughly 3,000 internal AI agents across its departments, about a 3:1 ratio of agents to remaining employees, with one manager reported as overseeing 37 agents. The agents are built on ClickUp's own platform and none is named individually | Reported | Yes | |
| Allianz PartnersCustomer service and claims roles, not HR roles. Included because it is the largest AI-attributed reduction yet recorded at a European insurer and because phone-based service and claims handling is the clearest leading indicator in the dataset for shared-services and HR-operations automation. The works council route also makes it the dataset's reference case for what an AI reduction looks like under co-determination. | 23kEnterprise | InsuranceTravel and Assistance Insurance | Jul 2026 | 7.3% | Customer service and claims handling, overwhelmingly call-centre roles. Allianz Partners describes the affected work as manual processes in customer enquiry handling and claims that AI is progressively automating. No HR-function roles are named | No tool, model or vendor is named. Allianz Partners describes the driver only as increasing automation of customer service and claims work using AI. This is the same gap that holds Oracle and E.W. Scripps at Reported: the attribution is explicit, the technology is not identified | Reported | Not disclosed | |
| ERGO GroupTelephony and claims roles, not HR roles. Included because it is one of very few cases in the dataset where a reduction and a named retraining commitment were announced together, by the HR director, with the company stating on the record that the retraining reduced the size of the cut. It is the counterweight to Allianz Partners in the same sector and year, and the dataset's clearest example of AI substitution delivered through managed attrition rather than a layoff event. | 36kEnterprise | InsurancePrimary Insurance | Feb 2026 | 6.7% | Telephony and claims processing, specifically the simple and repetitive tasks within them. ERGO names call centres and claims handling as the affected areas. No HR-function roles are named, though the retraining half of the plan is an HR programme in substance | No tool, model or vendor is named. ERGO describes only the reinforced use of AI to automate simple and repetitive work in telephony and claims processing | Reported | Partial |
